25k course description

Overview: The 25k adventure consists of a loop throughout Rib Mountain terrain. The course includes private property trails exclusive to this event! Gear bags will be delivered to aid stations. Racers will be challenged with technical terrain and plenty of climbing - so be sure to prepare for the ups and downs, with the loop including a couple bonus miles (approximately 16 mile / 26 k loop) and encompassing 3400 feet of elevation gain. Aid stations are between 2.5 miles and 4.0 miles apart. We highly recommend attending one of the free monthly group runs (more info on our Facebook page) to preview the course with fellow racers!

Details: After our race director waves the starting flag, racers take off from the race track then hit the trails.  Racers have room to thin out on the double track snowmobile trail on private property before some guided bushwhacking into Rib Mountain State Park.  Enjoy the golden maples on the Yellow Trail enroute to the Begonia aid station at mile 4 before gearing up for climbing to the top of Rib Mountain at High Point aid station at mile 6.5.  Here runners can refuel and get ready for some technical sections, especially with quick footing including the Red Trail enroute to the Quarry Trail.  After descending around the quarry, runners gear up for the climb including a rock scramble back to the top of Rib Mountain for a visit to the Dasher aid station at mile 9. At the top, runners can take in the fall colors and views of downtown Wausau. Then runners plummet down the ski hill – the highest vertical drop in the Midwest only to climb right back up!  After scurrying up another rock scramble on the ski hill, runners return to Dasher aid station then move onto the paved Blue Trail.  Runners then scamper down the Yellow Trail before returning on the snowmobile trail to the finish at State Park Speedway.

Planned 25k and 50k race course (two laps). Please respect private properties, which are only open to racers on race day!

50k course description

Overview: The 50k adventure consists of two loops (approximately 26k each - you’re welcome for the extra fun!) throughout Rib Mountain terrain. After the first loop, return to State Park Speedway’s race track and head out again. Resist the urge to spend it all in the first lap and test your endurance and experience the mountain with new legs and eyes...and have another chance to curse at those *&%^$(@ hills you “loved” the first time through. Enjoy the view from the top, take a selfie, and have some final quality time with the woods. The course includes private property trails exclusive to this event! Gear bags will be delivered to aid stations. Racers will be challenged with technical terrain and plenty of climbing - so be sure to prepare for the ups and downs, with the full distance (actually about 32 miles / 52 k) encompassing nearly 7000 feet of elevation gain, making it one of the toughest 50ks in the Midwest. We highly recommend attending one of the free monthly group runs (more info on our Facebook page) to preview the course with fellow racers!

Details: Same as the 25k description above, except after a lap around the track and accessing gear bags, runners get to do it all again…if they dare. Aid stations are never more than 4 miles apart.

15k course description

Overview: The 15k adventure immerses runners into Rib Mountain with a sampling of the vertical challenge (1400 feet). Runners start and end on State Park Speedway’s race track, gallop through the woods, climb to the top of Rib Mountain, and circle around the quarry. The course includes private property trails exclusive to this event! Two aid stations along the route support runners (no gear bag drop for 15k). The course will be the same as the 2022 course except we eliminated the out-and-back into the quarry to avoid confusion. This course provides trail runners a true trail challenge with highlights of Rib Mountain State Park, perfect to introduce new trail runners to the sport. We highly recommend attending one of the free monthly group runs (more info on our Facebook page) for those newer to trail running to ask questions and preview the course.

As runners reach the top, they can take in the view of fall majesty, take a selfie, and refuel. Then runners take off for some final quality time in the woods with some technical sections, especially with quick footing on the Red Trail enroute to the Quarry Trail. While descending around the quarry, runners split from the 25k/50k course with a plummet back into State Park Speedway via a secret route. After a lap around the track, racers reach the well-deserved finish line.
