why ironbull ultra trail?

Rib Mountain is a beauty to behold any season of the year. Whether you call it home, or if you are just passing through, you can’t help but admire this glacially eroded creation. But why observe from a distance what you can experience through all your senses. Welcome to IRONBULL™ Ultra Trail.

What better way to discover than to dive right in the twists and climbs, running under a bounty of colored hardwoods on the gorgeous trails of Rib Mountain State Park. Sounds like “a walk in the park” so far, right? IRONBULL™ racers will partake in the challenge of steep climbs up and down the ski runs of Granite Peak and forested rock scrambles that will bring your PR to a screeching halt and evoke that wonderful feeling of just being a kid again, adventuring in the forest.

Do you have the endurance and strength to finish this challenge?

Course Description
The 50k adventure consists of 2 (approximate) 10 mile loops throughout Rib Mountain terrain. After the first loop, you turn around and head in the opposite direction the second time. Resist the urge to spend it all in the first lap and test your endurance by attempting to achieve the fastest second loop split! Experience the mountain with new legs and eyes...and have a second chance to curse at those *&%^$(@ hills you “loved” the first time through. Even better, take the opportunity to support other runners in passing. And remember, there will be fully stocked aid stations approximately every 5 miles. After the second loop, it’s time to make one last trip to the top, take a selfie, have some final quality time with the woods and hammer some pavement for the remaining 9 miles of well marked, traffic controlled roads and pedestrian trails.

The 15k adventure will consist of the 50k route’s final climb and descent onto the road portion. Again, you’ll never go more than 5 miles without an aid station.

Be careful, the volunteers are the best in the business, you may easily fall in love with them -- consider this your warning.

Granite Peak’s Histror

Spectators / Crew Access
Crew access couldn’t be easier for this race and provides a great chance for the non runners to enjoy Granite Peak and get a little taste of our city. Once at Granite Peak, get an IRONBULL™ exclusive ski lift ride to the summit (may be purchased at the pre-race 10/4 expo or day of the event) to cheer on the racers and then enjoy the beautiful fall colors as you ride back down to the base to head back to the 400 Block to support the achievement of the runners’ hard day of work!

Aerial view of Wausau’s 400 block covered in tents and people for a festival.

Finish Line Festivities
An even better way to get a taste of our city - the well deserved post race party being held on the 400 Block upon your finish! Family, friends, food, music, and most importantly, beer (including craft brews) and drinks, are there to congratulate you, an IRONBULL™ finisher. Spectators may enjoy Wausau Events Harvest Fest festivities from 10am-2pm on the 400 Block which includes everything from pumpkins to crafts to horse-drawn wagon rides to live music.

Racers and spectators will have full access to the YMCA located 3 blocks from the 400 Block to enjoy a swim, sauna, and of course a well deserved shower after the race.

Music by the Allen Brothers Band will energize the 400 Block from 3 pm to 7 pm at the finish line festival.

Green Initiative

Ways to enjoy the race and enjoy the beauty around us with minimal impact!

  • Encourage your crew/ family/ friends to enjoy the ski lift to the top of the mountain instead of driving there

  • Compost bins located at every aid station and at the finish line festival will go toward local Monk Gardens / Wausau Urban Community Gardens.

  • Our event will be cupless!! We will have reusable bottles available at the Finish line festival for refill. Otherwise, please plan accordingly by bringing your own reusable bottle or cup!
