So much goes into bringing a race together from a organizational or racer standpoint. In addition, the inaugural IRONBULL Winter Triathlon brought together three disciplines - cross country skiing, fat tire biking, and snowshoeing.

For racers to conquer this challenge they need technique, balance, stamina, and versatility. We had 30 individuals tackle all three disciplines on their own. We also had eight teams where teammates relied on each other to conquer each leg of the course. This was the first time skiers, fat tire bikers, and snowshoers were all brought together at Nine Mile County Recreation Area.

From the racers

Many racers were impressed with Nine Mile as well as the inaugural event. Here’s a sampling of feedback:

  • “Nine Mile is an awesome place for a winter tri. The courses were challenging but doable for all skill levels. Very well run race from start to finish.”

  • “Best winter triathlon course EVER!!!”

  • “I don’t think I’ve ever had such a fun time competing in a triathlon style event so far! The trails were beautiful, the people were fun, and the swag was cool.”

Making it possible

Race director, Rebecca Tuley, brought the event together. Despite having to wait a year due to chaotic January 2019 weather, her efforts paid off, with a smoothly run inaugural event in 2020.

What’s next

IRONBULL has additional multi-sport races. The next IRONBULL event, the Rib Mountain Adventure Challenge is the largest adventure race in the United States Adventure Racing Series. Last year, ages 8 through 70 raced, so there’s something for nearly all ages! Try the Rib Mountain Adventure Challenge - Winter Edition for a snowy version.

And if you’re not up for racing, please consider joining us as a spectator or volunteer at an event.
