The area’s newest disc golf course located at Liberty Park offers newcomers and families a great opportunity to give the sport a try. This 9 hole course compliments Yellow Banks, Big Eau Pleine, Memorial Park, John Muir Middle School, Horace Mann Middle School, and Timberwolf Run (NTC) disc golf courses.

Beyond disc golf

I have to admit, my six-year-old daughter was far more interested in the playground at Liberty Park than her first time disc golfing. With Liberty Park’s volleyball court, basketball court, tennis courts, baseball diamond, soccer field, shelter and grill onsite, this park could easily be a full afternoon of outdoor activities. Or with its proximity to so many neighborhoods on the MPO bike route, a destination for a bike ride.

A walk (or skip and run) in the park

My daughter preferred walking the course (skipping actually) than playing disc golf; nonetheless it was a great stroll through the woods! And when we reached Hole 8 and she spotted the rolling terrain, she yelled, “Can we run this one?” As a runner, this was candy to my ears! “Of course!” I replied moments before she scampered away. This was her (and my) highlight of the outing. As far as throwing a disc, I think her favorite was the basket atop a raised mound on Hole 9.

Years in the making

After hitting a snag on another possible disc golf location a couple of years ago, the Town of Rib Mountain Park Commission revisited Liberty Park as a possible location to better utilize the park. With the park small (only 13.5 acres), the Parks Commission were pleasantly surprised to fit a full 9-hole course. A survey to Town of Rib Mountain residents found an overwhelming majority in favor of adding a disc golf course to Liberty Park.

We’re still working on disc golf rules, never getting in front of the thrower, but it’s so hard when it’s so exciting, especially to spot the baskets!

Despite no parks commission members as avid disc golfers, several members did the brunt of the work from initial course design, fieldwork, and all the way to the ribbon cutting as a means to promote the park. Without any prior disc golf design experience, they reached out to local disc golf expert, Peter Hoover, a member of the local club, Wausau Area Disc Golf Enthusiasts (WADGE). WADGE provided tips on disc golf at the park’s ribbon cutting ceremony where we learned different throws including rollers and tomahawks!

Multiple tees on several holes allow both novices and advanced players appropriate challenges. Minimal trees were cut (only trees under 6” diameter were removed, with several replanted) and branches trimmed. The narrow lanes provide a challenge for advanced players, whereas I found short throws adequate to get to the tee. The absence of water ensures no lost discs from novices such as myself.

Location, location, location

With the proximity to Rothschild via the Wisconsin River pedestrian bridge connecting to the Cedar Creek Trail, disc golfers from beyond Rib Mountain are expected to visit the park.

Liberty Park is located minutes from Hwy 51/29 interchange about a 1/2 mile south of Briq’s. My one regret…not bringing a few dollars to get a one pound ice cream cone from Briq’s on the way home!

Hole 9 is an “aggression hole” where players can air it out with views of Mosinee Hill in the background.
