Family Winter skating adventures

The lack of snow has some upsides to do things you wouldn’t normally be able to do.  Like the opportunity to adventure in the woods and ice skate on remote lakes. We combined both (plus some fat tire biking)!  We had so much fun, we returned, skating on a total of three remote lakes at the Underdown Recreation Area. Here’s a photo essay of our experiences!

First edition

We tagged along while dad joined a delayed Global Fat Bike Day celebration. After their departure, we had our own grand adventure!

We warmed up with a bushwhack, rockhopping a small creek.

The kids pretended to roast marshmallows over the campfire with their cattails.

We explored everything, including inside the rootstock.

We checked out every corner of the lake.

After circumnavigating the entire lake to find the best ice, we settled on a home base where we enjoyed our lunch complete with hot cocoa.

Second edition

We had so much fun the first time, we convinced dad to go on another fat bike ride so we could come back several weeks later, exploring a new lake…on skates!

The morning’s frost was picturesque and we had it all to ourselves!

Ice skating angel, instead of a snow angel!

Swiss Lake had not one, but two islands that would otherwise be inaccessible!  We took an intermission from skating for hide-and-seek.  Out-of-bounds was simple – just stay on the island!

This outing we enjoyed skating on two different lakes with islands. This one was conveniently located close to the car so we didn’t need to hike in our picnic this time.

Too much fun to be had, so homemade pizza on the go!

Taking a break and listening to the lake talking to us with all sorts of sounds. Hot cocoa was a tasty treat to fuel a fat bike ride of my own after dad returned.
